Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) sent a letter last night to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas urging a thorough investigation into the string of bomb threats against Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) around the country. These threats have targeted several HBCUs, including Bowie State University in Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District, on three occasions over the last month: January 4, January 31, and again on February 1 – the first day of Black History Month – forcing lockdowns and heightening fears in communities across the nation.

This week, I join so many in our District in celebrating the beginning of Black History Month. Black History Month is indeed a time for celebration, where all month long we pay tribute to the tremendous contributions of African-Americans throughout our history. It is also a time of great reflection, as we recognize the extraordinary sacrifice, courage, and resilience that has been demonstrated by the African American community throughout our history.
