I was pleased to meet with Secretary McDonald yesterday to discuss how the Department of Veteran Affairs is working to meet the needs of veterans at the Baltimore Regional Office and throughout the country.

I'm pleased that the 21 HUD-VASH vouchers awarded today to the Calvert County Housing Authority will provide nearly $200,000 to help combat homelessness among veterans throughout Southern Maryland's tri-county area.

Harriet Tubman is a national hero and one of the greatest figures in our country's history. I'm pleased that through these national parks – one in her birthplace on Maryland's Eastern Shore and the other in New York, where she lived for several decades – we will honor her extraordinary life and legacy and provide Americans with the opportunity to learn more about her work to advance equality, opportunity, and justice.

I'm pleased that this grant will help homeowners whose properties were directly affected by the slope failure and who were forced from their homes as a result.

I encourage Fifth District residents to join millions of Americans on Saturday, November 29th, in shopping and dining locally to show support for Maryland businesses.

It was great to speak with so many of our future leaders at the Friends Community School this afternoon. I particularly enjoyed discussing with these bright students the importance of the legislative process and their interest in foreign policy and supporting diplomacy to build a more peaceful world.

I was pleased to see navigators and assisters in action today at the Capital Region Health Connector Entity helping consumers understand the differences between health care plans, determine their eligibility for financial assistance or Medicaid, and enroll.

I was pleased to visit the St. Hugh Ladies of Charity Food Pantry today to see firsthand how they are helping to provide nonperishable food items to families and individuals in the Fifth District.
