Hoyer Statement on New Metro General Manager

November 5, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Board of Directors announced that they have unanimously named Paul Wiedefeld as Metro's new General Manager and Chief Executive Officer:

"I welcome today's news that Metro has selected a permanent General Manager to oversee its day-to-day operations. I don't believe the hiring of Mr. Wiedefeld will immediately solve all of Metro's issues, but it's an important step in the right direction to restoring the trust of its riders and stakeholders. I hope Mr. Wiedefeld's regional background and wealth of managerial experience in the public and private sectors, including his time spent as the CEO of the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Administrator of the Maryland Transit Administration, will help to address Metro's immediate challenges. I look forward to working with him to ensure that Metro's safety meets the highest standard for those who rely on Metro, including many commuters in the Fifth District."

Wiedefeld will be officially appointed at WMATA's next Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, November 19th.
