Women deserve the freedom to make their own decisions about their own health care, and it is a travesty that Republican-led states are considering and enacting legislation to prevent them from doing so.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) was joined by Congressman Anthony Brown (MD-04) and Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) for the 41st Annual Black History Month Breakfast, which celebrated this year’s Black History Month theme, Black Health and Wellness. Congressman Hoyer released the following video highlighting speeches and performances from the breakfast that took place virtually this past weekend. Several of this year’s speakers also touched on the importance of combating racial disparities in communities in Maryland and across the country, including keynote speaker Dr. Kizzmekia S. Corbett, Assistant Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, who helped develop the COVID-19 vaccines.

Tax season is now underway, and millions of Americans are beginning to file their 2021 tax returns. This year, the tax filing process may look different, especially if you are a member of one of thousands of households who received the historic monthly Child Tax Credit payments last year, or Economic Impact Payments from the American Rescue Plan. The deadline to file taxes is April 18, 2022, but the sooner you start your process the better to avoid any delays in receiving a refund.

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Senators Chris Van Hollen (MD) and Ben Cardin (MD) and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02), John Sarbanes (MD-03), Kweisi Mfume (MD-07), Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), Jamie Raskin (MD-08), and David Trone (MD-06) urged the Maryland Department of Labor to apply for a new program funded by the American Rescue Plan to improve the state’s unemployment insurance system, in the wake of the severe delays and errors encountered by tens of thousands of unemployed Marylanders amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The lawmakers’ offices have heard from thousands of their constituents who have struggled to receive their unemployment benefits from the Maryland Department of Labor. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, during 2020 and 2021 Maryland only disbursed 59.2 percent of initial payments for unemployment benefits within 21 days, below the national average of 65 percent for the same time period.
