Hoyer Statement on Developments in Israel
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement on recent developments in Israel:
"I was pleased to hear the recent announcement that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government will delay their legislation to overhaul the judiciary. Israeli leaders in the coalition and the opposition must take this opportunity to come together with President Herzog and negotiate in good faith to find a compromise that will strengthen Israel's democracy and security. In the meantime, no one should seek to inflame the situation or empower extremists. Whether in the United States or Israel, maintaining strong checks and balances on individual branches of government is critical to the endurance of any democracy – and, in its current state, this proposed legislation does not achieve that result. Similarly, upholding the rights of all citizens must always remain a priority. I echo President Biden in urging Israeli leaders to keep these principles at the forefront of their negotiations.
"Ever since the moment nearly 75 years ago when the United States became the first country to recognize the state of Israel just eleven minutes after its founding, our nations have shared a deep bond rooted in our shared devotion to democracy and the rule of law. Throughout my time in Congress, I have been proud to do everything I can to deepen our already robust partnership. I will continue working to ensure that America and Israel move forward together to secure greater security, prosperity, and democracy – not only for our two nations but for the whole world."
