This evening, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) spoke on the House Floor of in support of his resolution to allow the Greater Washington Soap Box Derby to occur on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. The annual event, which will take place on June 18, includes youth from across the Washington Metropolitan area, including many from the Fifth District. Congressman Hoyer has sponsored a resolution in support of the race for twenty-nine years.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) met with Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry and his leadership team yesterday to discuss the efforts underway in the department for the year ahead. Their conversation covered a variety of topics including: the work the department has done to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and residents in Charles County, improved diversity training and best practices training for officers, and stronger accountability protocols.

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) visited the newly-opened LifeStyles of Maryland Emergency Shelter in White Plains. The shelter is the first of its kind in the region, offering around-the-clock support services to families in need. Currently, the facility is open for twenty-five families, but will soon have capacity to house up to fifty families. Congressman Hoyer has been a strong advocate in Congress for initiatives to combat homelessness in Southern Maryland. Earlier this year, Hoyer secured $160,000 in the Fiscal Year ‘22 Omnibus for LifeStyles of Maryland to provide wrap-around services for residents at the Southern Crossing transitional housing project in Charles County.

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Ben Cardin (D-MD), and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02), John Sarbanes (MD-03), Kweisi Mfume (MD-07), Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), Jamie Raskin (MD-08), and David Trone (MD-06) announced $3,783,406 in federal funding for colleges and universities across the state of Maryland to help underrepresented communities enter and complete higher education degree programs.

Sadly, tragic events like those that transpired in Uvalde last week no longer come as a surprise, but that doesn't make them any less searing. Like all of you, I feel immense grief whenever we're faced with these difficult times. From Sandy Hook to Stoneman Douglas, Great Mills to the Capital Gazette, and now to Robb Elementary, we have seen the consequences of our gun violence epidemic time and time again. According to CDC data, guns killed nearly 45,000 people in 2020, and over 700 of those people died in mass shootings.

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) announced the winner of the 2022 Fifth District Congressional Art Competition. Liliana McGee, a senior at Elizabeth Seton High School, earned first place in this year’s competition with her piece titled "Salvation.” McGee’s artwork will be on display in the Capitol building for one year along with other winning submissions from districts across the country.

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Ben Cardin (D-MD), Congressman Anthony Brown (MD-04), and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks announced that they successfully secured authorization and funding to upgrade the Prince George’s County veterans clinic, operated by the Veterans Health Administration, in a bill released by the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

Hoyer (MD-05) along with U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02), John Sarbanes (MD-03), Kweisi Mfume (MD-07), Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), Jamie Raskin (MD-08), and David Trone (MD-06) delivered $198,404,958 to spur economic growth and support small businesses in Maryland through the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) Program. This Treasury Department program was reauthorized and expanded by the American Rescue Plan which the lawmakers fought to pass.
