Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) and Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (D-MD) and staff from the office of Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) met with Prince George's and Montgomery County officials leading the development of the Prince George's-Montgomery County Gang Initiative (PGMCGI), which received a $2.7 million federal appropriation last year through the request of Reps. Hoyer, Edwards and Van Hollen. Members of the committee provided an overview of its strategic plan to implement gang prevention and intervention activities.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer announced the names of six students from Marylands Fifth Congressional District (Charles, Calvert, St. Marys and areas of Prince Georges and Anne Arundel counties) who he nominated to attend one of four U.S. Service Academies have received appointment offers for the next school year. Hoyer held a reception for the students and their families at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC on June 3. Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) spoke this morning at a dedication ceremony for the new Aircraft Prototype Facility (APF) at Patuxent Naval Air Station, for which Rep. Hoyer helped secure $17.9 million in federal funds within the FY2008 military construction appropriations bill. The new APF will further enhance testing capabilities to streamline the pre-production process and elevate Pax Rivers role in the supporting the warfighter.

Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown, chairman of the Governors Subcabinet on Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), announced new funding, new partnerships and new initiatives to support BRAC jobs coming to Fort George G. Meade in Anne Arundel County, including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with all public, private and governmental parties to develop a Transportation Demand Management Plan for Fort Meade.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) and a majority in the House voted late last Friday to pass the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2011 (H.R. 5136) to strengthen military readiness and counterterrorism efforts and to ensure that service members and their families receive the benefits they deserve and have earned. The bill, which authorizes investments in Department of Defense operations for the next fiscal year, includes a number of projects for military installations in Marylands 5th Congressional District.

This Monday, we observe Memorial Day to honor the generations of brave men and women who lost their lives in our countrys service, from Americas founding up to the present day. In each generation, they bore pain and sacrifice so that those they left at home would not have to; we owe our countrys safety and its liberties to their courage.

Hoyer (D-MD) joined a majority in the House today to pass the American Jobs, Closing Tax Loopholes, and Preventing Outsourcing Act(House amendment to Senate amendment to H.R. 4213) containing measures to help create or save more than a million American jobs, close corporate tax loopholes that ship jobs overseas, and extend a variety of tax deductions to middle-class families.

On this Memorial Day, we continue to be engaged in hostilities in Iraq and Afghanistan, and young men and women will pay the ultimate price while wearing the uniform of our nation. Let us honor the memory of the 4,400 Americans who have died in Iraq and more than 1,000 who have died in Afghanistan. We also honor the sacrifices of our wounded: nearly 32,000 U.S. troops in Iraq and 5,700 in Afghanistan.
