Federal Employees Participate in Red Cross Training as Part of Gabby Giffords Save-a-Life Campaign

March 18, 2011

Office of Congressman Hoyer, NASA Goddard, Red Cross Team Up to Teach Employees Life-Saving Skills

GREENBELT, MD – Today, the Office of Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) hosted an event in conjunction with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the American Red Cross to kick-off of the national Gabrielle Giffords Honorary Save-a-Life campaign – a series of events to promote the importance of first aid and CPR skills.  Nearly 100 employees of NASA took part in a shortened version of the official Red Cross training for basic hands-only CPR, the treatment of shock, and how to treat wounds.  On Saturday, March 19, at more than 100 locations across the Nation, the Red Cross will provide the same training to the general public.

After the event, Congressman Hoyer released the following statement:

"Today, members of our Fifth District community joined together in an effort to raise awareness of lifesaving first aid and CPR skills that saved Congresswoman Giffords' life and helped the lives of so many others after the tragic shooting in Tucson. We cannot change the events of that day, but we can focus our energy instead on learning from this tragedy – through the knowledge of critical first aid and CPR skills and by addressing the importance of public safety and emergency preparedness. I am so proud that so many dedicated federal employees at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center participated in today's event, and I want to thank the American Red Cross for organizing events like these throughout the country and for their continued commitment to the well-being of those here in our communities and throughout the world."
