Hoyer Statement on Maryland Congressional Delegation Meeting with Governor O'Malley

March 16, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) joined the Maryland Congressional delegation for a meeting with Governor Martin O'Malley and members of his Cabinet at the U.S. Capitol to discuss Maryland's Federal priorities.  He released the following statement:

"We had a productive meeting today with Governor Martin O'Malley, the Cabinet, and Maryland officials on the challenges facing Maryland and how we can best work together to advance the State's priorities. It is important that we continue to have these discussions, which are critical to maintaining the partnership between Maryland's Federal and State leaders, so that we can effectively deliver real results for Maryland residents.

"The Governor focused on a number of issues important to Maryland, including the need for continued investment in our transportation infrastructure, elementary and secondary education, workforce development, and Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts. He discussed how these and other priorities are being threatened by Republicans' reckless budget cuts, and why it is so important that we come together to protect the programs vital to Maryland's economy and future – programs that ensure the well-being of Maryland and all of its residents. I am equally concerned about the impact that the Republican budget would have on our State, so I asked that each Department head analyze the consequences and report back their findings.

"In considering the future of our State, I hope to work with the Governor and State officials to advance the Make It In America agenda here in Maryland, including smart investments in education, research and infrastructure, so that we can strengthen our ability to innovate and manufacture goods right here in America, and help middle-class families make it in America. I look forward to working with the Governor to ensure that all of our priorities receive the attention they deserve."
