I was pleased to meet with the Fifth District Make It In America Advisory Committee today to continue discussing the jobs plan I am leading in Congress and hear their ideas on steps we can take in Prince Georges County and Southern Maryland to help our businesses grow and add jobs.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my dear friend, former Delegate and Judge David Ross. It was a great honor to serve with David in the Maryland General Assembly, where he worked tirelessly on behalf of Prince Georges County. He was an extraordinary man of integrity and always took a just and balanced approach as a Judge on the Prince Georges County Circuit Court.

It is my great privilege this evening to present the inaugural Career Achievement Award to a journalist who has set the standard of how to cover Capitol Hill for over three decades.

I thank Denis McDonough for visiting the Baltimore Regional Office today as part of the Administrations continued effort to end the unacceptable backlog of disability claims filed by veterans in Maryland and across the country.

Each year on Memorial Day, we remember the courageous individuals who gave all they had to protect our nation and the values that sustain our democracy. In every generation, Americans have been called to take up arms in defense of the rights and freedoms we hold dear not only for ourselves but for others who yearn for peace, justice, and liberty around the world.

Mr. Speaker, as the sequesters effects continue to place our economy and national security at risk, the news that 650,000 civilian defense workers will be forced to take unpaid leave ought to alarm all Americans who are concerned about our military readiness and national security. These furloughs will affect thousands who live in my district and thousands who live in the districts of every Member here.
