The Black maternal health crisis is a serious challenge in Maryland, and too many mothers and mothers-to-be have suffered unnecessarily from pregnancy-related complications that could have otherwise been prevented. Yesterday I convened a roundtable discussion with Congressman Anthony Brown (MD-04), Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12), and Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) to hear from experts on the status of Black maternal health in Maryland and across our country.

Yesterday, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger, John Sarbanes, Kweisi Mfume, Andy Harris, M.D., Anthony Brown, Jamie Raskin, and David Trone announced more than $12.8 million in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan to meet the academic, emotional, social and mental health needs of homeless students across the state.

This morning, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) hosted a virtual roundtable discussion with Congressman Anthony Brown (MD-04), Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12), and Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (IL-14) on the status of Black maternal health in our country. This week I was proud to bring H.R. 51, the Washington, DC Admission Act, to the House Floor for a second time and ensure its passage. I continue to be a strong supporter of DC statehood, as not just a matter of civil rights, but of equality for all Americans. H.R. 51 will make sure that the more than 700,000 residents of the District of Columbia have an equal voice in our democracy once and for all.
