In the short span of fewer than 100 days, the U.S. Capitol Police force lost three members as a result of attacks on the Capitol complex. And while a Congressional Gold Medal is a very fitting tribute, it can neither lessen the grief felt by their fellow officers nor reduce the sense of unease that so many of them must still be feeling today. This has been a very challenging time for the Capitol Police force.

During Black Maternal Health Week, I applaud the strong executive actions taken by President Biden and Vice President Harris to address longstanding racial inequities in our health care system – which have been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic – and improve health outcomes for Black mothers and mothers-to-be.

The fatal police shooting in Minnesota on Sunday and the horrifying incident in Virginia that came to public attention in recent days, in which a uniformed military officer was the victim of police misconduct during a traffic stop, are the two latest examples of the persistent bias against African Americans in our country. No one can claim surprise anymore why so many African Americans are afraid of encounters with law enforcement.

Hoyer (MD-05) visited Greater Baden Medical Services, a Federally Qualified Health Center that was recently chosen to participate into the Biden Administration’s equitable vaccination program at the request of Rep. Hoyer, which will strengthen efforts to get more vaccines in the arms of residents in underserved communities and eliminate disparities in access.

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks participated in a tour of the Greenbelt mass vaccination site, a FEMA-run site located at the Greenbelt Metro Station. Rep. Hoyer previously joined in calls for FEMA to establish a mass vaccination site in Prince George's County, which has suffered from a disproportionate number of COVID-19 infections, deaths, and low vaccination rates.
