Brown (MD-04), Jamie B. Raskin (MD-08), Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01), and David Trone (MD-06), to call on U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to select Maryland as the permanent home for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), a new agency proposed by President Biden to improve the U.S. government’s ability to speed biomedical and health research.

I was proud to introduce the Southern Maryland National Heritage Area Act last year, and I was excited to bring it to the Floor today and support its passage by the House.  I’ve had the great honor of representing Maryland’s Fifth District of Maryland for more than four decades, and during that time I’ve traveled the length and breadth of its counties, visiting communities steeped in history and a keen awareness and appreciation of the local environment and heritage.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Ben Cardin (D-MD), and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02), John Sarbanes (MD-03), Kweisi Mfume (MD-07), Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), Jamie B. Raskin (MD-08), and David Trone (MD-06) announced $95 million in federal funding for broadband infrastructure projects that will provide high-quality internet to areas that lack access to adequate service. This funding comes from the Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund (CPF), which was established by the American Rescue Plan that the Democratic lawmakers fought to pass in March 2021.

Yesterday, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), and Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02), John Sarbanes (MD-03), Kweisi Mfume (MD-07), Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), Jamie Raskin (MD-08), David Trone (MD-06), and Andy Harris (MD-01) announced $1,249,912 in federal funding to help prevent youth drug and substance use in communities across Maryland. This Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program continuation grant is administered by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC).

Last month, the conservative-majority Supreme Court overruled the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision -- turning back the clock for women’s freedom to make their own reproductive health care decisions nationwide, and putting millions of Americans at risk. This ruling is deeply out of step with the American people as polling continues to show that a bipartisan majority of Americans oppose the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), and Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) urged the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) to pause its plans to demolish the existing Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge until an independent review is conducted to determine the feasibility and cost of repurposing it for recreational use.
