July 24, 2023 Press Release WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) joined the Director of the Office of Broadband, Rick Gordon, Deputy Secretary of the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, Owen McEvoy, Assistant Secretary for Strategic Initiatives, Julia Glanz, and Chief Legislative Officer, Chuck Cook to discuss the implementation of broadband funding in Maryland. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, passed during the 117th Congress invested an additional $65 billion in broadband funding that will help expand access to broadband coverage across the country. “For too long, financial barriers and lack of infrastructure have prevented people across the country, and throughout Maryland, from accessing essential online services,” said Congressman Hoyer. “Today, I was proud to meet with local officials and discuss how we can continue connecting Marylanders with the affordable, reliable broadband internet made possible by Democrats in the 117th Congress.” “The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is expanding these broadband initiatives to ensure all Americans can be connected to the resources they need. As Chair of the Regional Leadership Council, I am working closely with Leader Jeffries and President Biden to ensure that every community in our country can see and feel the impact of the Investing in America agenda.” “With the NTIA’s quarter billion dollar investment in our state, our goal of closing the digital divide and resolving inequities for countless Marylanders is closer than it’s ever been,” said Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Jake Day. “We’re committed to partnering with our local jurisdictions to make sure these funds will work optimally for all of our residents, taking unique regional and socioeconomic needs into account.” The Investing in America agenda is saving families in Maryland’s 5th District roughly $30 a month on their internet bills.
