In 2001, in response to the attacks of 9/11, the United States began a war in Afghanistan that targeted Osama bin Laden, al-Qaeda, and the Taliban, which provided bin Laden with sanctuary and aid.

Today, the House passed the FY12 Defense Authorization bill, which gives our Armed Forces the resources they need to keep our country safe, and also supports our military families.

As a proud alumnus of the University of Maryland, the recent months have brought some bittersweet news. An era is coming to an end in the Terrapin athletic program, as our successful coaches of basketball and football have left the school.

Foreclosure continues to be a serious problem for Prince Georges County, where over one third of the residents are behind on their mortgage.

Investing in education has long been a priority in Maryland, and I am pleased to stand with Secretary Duncan, Lt. Governor Brown and all those who participated today, in recognizing the importance of providing a quality education to all of our children.

And thank you for taking such a strong interest in what happens in Congressan interest I saw reflected in the challenging questions some of you submitted for me, and because of the more than 25 in-depth and insightful letters I received from you. Im here, in fact, because of the letters I received, and because of how seriously you take our countrys problems.

I was pleased to join local manufacturers, business leaders, and educators today for a very productive discussion on how we can best meet the employment needs of local manufacturers and how the Make It In America agenda and JOBS Act would be helpful to future success and local economic growth.

I rise to honor the legacy of Marylands Governor William Donald Schaefer, who died on April 18th after a long life of public service.
