Today, President Obama announced the members of a bipartisan commission appointed to make recommendations on responding to and preventing offshore oil spills, such as the BP spill devastating the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf Coast. The commissions members bring expertise in a range of relevant fields, from oil drilling to engineering to environmental science.

Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) spoke this morning to more than 1,000 Maryland fire service men and women at the 118th Annual Convention of the Maryland State Firemens Association (MSFA) and Ladies Auxiliary in Ocean City. Hoyer also recognized incoming presidents of the MFSA and Ladies Auxiliary - Doyle Cox of Prince Frederick and Sandi Lutz of Glenn Dale who both live in counties he represents in Congress.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) announced that beginning today Medicare will start automatically mailing out $250 rebate checks to tens of thousands of seniors who fall into the Medicare Part D prescription drug "donut hole" gap in coverage. The checks, which are part of the new health insurance reform law, will continue to be mailed monthly over the next several months until the end of this year as more seniors enter the coverage gap.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) and Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (D-MD) and staff from the office of Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) met with Prince George's and Montgomery County officials leading the development of the Prince George's-Montgomery County Gang Initiative (PGMCGI), which received a $2.7 million federal appropriation last year through the request of Reps. Hoyer, Edwards and Van Hollen. Members of the committee provided an overview of its strategic plan to implement gang prevention and intervention activities.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer announced the names of six students from Marylands Fifth Congressional District (Charles, Calvert, St. Marys and areas of Prince Georges and Anne Arundel counties) who he nominated to attend one of four U.S. Service Academies have received appointment offers for the next school year. Hoyer held a reception for the students and their families at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC on June 3.
