Hoyer Statement on Federal Employees and President's Plan for Deficit Reduction

September 19, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement after President Obama announced his plan to reduce the deficit::

"The plan put forward by the President today is a balanced approach to creating jobs and bringing down the deficit. However, under the President's plan, federal employees are asked to contribute an additional 1.2 percent of their pay into a federal retirement system, a permanent pay reduction that will impact all federal employees. It is important to remember that these men and women have already sacrificed to help put the nation on sounder fiscal footing, including a 2-year pay freeze that will save $60 billion over ten years. In the coming days, as we work to address our long-term deficit, I will continue fighting to ensure that our plan for deficit reduction does not disproportionately impact federal employees."
