Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today on President Biden's executive order to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour for employees of federal contractors, which goes into effect this Sunday:

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Senators Chris Van Hollen (MD) and Ben Cardin (MD) and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02), John Sarbanes (MD-03), Kweisi Mfume (MD-07), Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), Jamie Raskin (MD-08), and David Trone (MD-06) announced $7,307,365 in American Rescue Plan funding for health and public safety workforce resiliency training and health care worker mental wellness programs at Johns Hopkins University, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and Congressmen Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02), John Sarbanes (MD-03), Jamie Raskin (MD-08), joined in urging the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to allow the proposed transfer of a 105-acre parcel of land currently owned by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service so it can be added to the adjacent Patuxent Research Refuge.

Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) announced $2.15 million in funding from the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge Herring Bay and Rockhold Creek in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. This funding was provided in the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, brought to the House Floor by Congressman Hoyer in his role as Majority Leader, and through additional Congressional appropriations. Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) observed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day by participating in virtual events in the Fifth Congressional District, including St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s eighteenth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Celebration and the Charles County NAACP’s twenty-seventh annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast. 

Today, Congressman Steny Hoyer (MD-05) announced that Maryland will be receiving $81.9 million in funds from the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act for 2022.

The surge in COVID-19 cases across the country and here in the Fifth District is a very serious matter. The Omicron variant has caused a spike in cases, overwhelmed hospitals, and placed Maryland in a second state of emergency since this pandemic began in March of 2020. This variant is spreading rapidly, with those who are not yet vaccinated experiencing the worst illness and facing a higher risk of hospitalization.
