It is with great sadness each year that we gather in May to remember our fallen heroes, but what we measure in grief is equaled by the pride we have in those who served and gave their lives.

I was honored to join our nation's fire fighters this evening to thank them for their courage and dedication to keeping our communities safe.

Americans have always looked to the men and women of our Armed Forces with gratitude and appreciation for placing their lives on the line to defend our freedoms, and as we begin observing National Military Appreciation Month throughout May, let us continue to salute their heroism, service, and sacrifice.

Today, the office of Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5)announced that the House of Representatives has issued a one month delay in the deadline for submitting entries for the first annual Congressional science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) academic competition, the House Student App Challenge, for high school students in Maryland's Fifth Congressional District. New students are encouraged to consider joining the competition.

April marks the Month of the Military Child, and I was pleased to visit the Judy Hoyer Child Development Center at Joint Base Andrews to tour the facility and read to some of the curious, engaged, and eager children there.
