WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) joined Blue Dog Leaders and Members today for a press conference on statutory "pay-as-you-go" (PAYGO), which will be considered on the House Floor tomorrow. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:
"Tomorrow, the House will have the opportunity to take one of the most important votes for fiscal responsibility in a long time-and I want to thank my Blue Dog friends for working so long to make it possible. We will be voting to send statutory pay-as-you-go legislation to President Obama's desk.
Congressman Steny Hoyer praised President Obama's focus on job creation, fiscal responsibility and investing in America's future prosperity in his State of the Union Address delivered on Wednesday, January 27th. The President specifically mentioned a long-time priority for Rep. Hoyer to enact pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) legislation, requiring that any new spending or tax cuts be deficit-neutral.
Congressman Steny Hoyer, the House Majority Leader, outlined the 2010 Congressional agenda in a speech at the National Press Club. In his speech, he walked through continuing efforts to create jobs and grow the economy, and he laid out a strategy for reducing the deficit, including approving a strong pay-as-you-go law that will require government to exercise fiscal constraint.
