Hoyer Applauds Administration Announcement on Changes to the PTSD Benefits Claim Process

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement on President Obama's announced changes to help veterans with PTSD receive the benefits they need:

"On Monday, the Department of Veterans Affairs will begin making it easier for a veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder to get the benefits he or she needs.  Veterans will no longer have to go through the burdensome and timely process of producing detailed documented evidence to prove their PTSD is service-connected in order to receive assistance from VA.   In addition, the more streamlined process should make it easier for those without direct combat experience but still suffering the emotional scars of war to get the help they need.  As PTSD is one of the most common injuries afflicting veterans, this VA policy change will make a difference to thousands of veterans, including those in the Fifth District of Maryland, by speeding up the claims process so that those injured may receive compensation and treatment in a more timely manner.

"I welcome this important new rule to speed up PTSD claims processing, and commend Secretary Shinseki and the Department of Veterans Affairs for making this long overdue policy change."
