Hoyer (MD-5), in conjunction with local area Chambers of Commerce, today met with local small businesses to discuss the short- and long-term benefits of health insurance reform, how reform will impact them, and how they can get involved in Marylands reform implementation process. Hoyer was joined by Marie C. Johns, Deputy Administrator, Small Business Administration; Elizabeth P. Sammis, Acting Insurance Commissioner, Maryland Insurance Administration; and Terry Gardiner, National Policy Director, Small Business Majority.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) announced that the Fiscal Year 2011 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill approved tonight by the House contains significant investments to upgrade major transportation routes and transit projects while addressing community development needs in Marylands Fifth Congressional District. The funds were included at the request of Congressman Hoyer.

Today, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued the findings of its investigation of the June 22, 2009, accident involving the collision of two Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) trains that killed 9 people and injured nearly 80 others on the Red Line in Washington, D.C. NTSB determined that the probable cause of the accident was a malfunctioning of track circuits as well as Metro's failure to take appropriate measures to identify and prevent that problem.

Hoyer (MD-5) announced that the Fiscal Year 2011 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act approved today by the House contains significant investments for projects and programs that will benefit military facilities in Southern Maryland. Funding will go to the Naval Air Station (NAS), Patuxent River, and Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Indian Head, MD, for needed facility upgrades and additions that will not only enhance our nations defense capabilities, but also provide for Southern Marylands continued economic growth.

Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement after the Obama Administration announced new regulations that give consumers in new health plans the right to appeal decisions, including claims denials and rescissions, made by their health plans. This is a provision made available by the Affordable Care Act and part of the Acts critically important Patients Bill of Rights.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced 15 research and deployment partnerships to help improve the energy efficiency of American homes, including a partnership with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center in Upper Marlboro, MD. Leveraging their industry expertise, NAHB will provide technical assistance to retrofit projects to support DOEs energy efficiency retrofit programs, building on the Departments efforts to make cost-effective energy efficiency retrofits more easily accessible to hundreds of thousands of American homes and businesses.
