Across Maryland, individuals have lost jobs, been furloughed, or suffered reduced hours, causing an economic crisis in addition to the public health emergency.

During these challenging and uncertain times, it is a great honor to address the Spring 2020 graduates of the University of Maryland, College Park.

While our state is depending on essential workers to get us all through this pandemic, many of Maryland’s first responders, nurses, doctors, and frontline workers are depending on the affordable, high-quality child care provided by these centers.

Teachers, administrators, and state educational staff are moving mountains to continue to deliver a quality education to students across the state.

In light of recent reports that an inmate has died of complications due to COVID-19, we urge you to take aggressive actions to stop the further spread of this virus amongst the state’s prison population.

We are writing to offer our full support and assistance as you implement the unprecedented expansions of unemployment benefits recently enacted by Congress.

We strongly urge you to ensure that all health care entities impacted by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) are able to benefit from these funds with a particular focus on areas hardest hit by this outbreak, as well as rural and underserved areas.

Maryland’s airports, large and small, have always been critical economic hubs for our state and the entire mid-Atlantic region.
