The federal government shutdown is politically driven, unnecessary, and costly to the American people.  As many Marylanders are aware, the shutdown is having a negative impact on our economy, on federal employees in our region and around the country,

St. Marys public schools are jumping into the simulated flight business, courtesy of the new Pax River Flight Academy.

Congressman Steny Hoyer, Md.-5, recognized 15 award-winning teachers and principals in the Fifth District including three Prince Georges County educators during a luncheon Monday in Bowie.

A ribbon was cut Friday to mark the beginning of the Patuxent River Flight Academy at the Dr. James Forrest Career and Technology Center. A number of dignitaries were on hand to hear remarks, cut the ribbon and tour the state-of-the-art Aviation Classroom Experience (ACE).

Maryland's U.S. House delegation met Wednesday with Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki to keep pressure on the agency to fix problems at the troubled Baltimore office and follow up on promises for improvement.

Most Marylanders sense the states economy will be hard hit and their own finances squeezed should the series of deep federal spending cuts known as the sequester start as planned on Friday.

If federal funding meets the chopping block on Friday, the result could be furloughs and possible job loss for many of Marylands 260,000 federal employees as well as cuts to programs from Head Start to college work study to military facilities such as the U.S. Naval Academy.
