Hoyer (MD-05) joined Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Ben Cardin (D-MD) in announcing $400,571.41 in federal funding for Maryland firefighters and first responders in Southern Maryland. The funding will directly impact fire departments, State Fire Training Academies, and nonaffiliated emergency medical services organizations to enhance their response capabilities and ability to protect the health and safety of the public and first-responders.

Butterfield (NC-01), Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (MS-02), Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-02), Congressman John Sarbanes (MD-03), Congressman Anthony Brown (MD-04), Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Congressman David Trone (MD-06), Congressman Kweisi Mfume (MD-07); Chairman of the Rules Committee Jim McGovern (MD-02), Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (MO-05), Congressman Tom Malinowski (NJ-07), and Congresswomen Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Nikema Williams (GA-05) in writing a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Senators Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) demanding action on H.R. 3005, legislation to remove the bust of Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney from the U.S. Capitol building and replace it with a bust of Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall. The House passed this legislation over a year ago on June 26, 2021 to remove from public display in the U.S. Capitol other statues or busts that are symbols of slavery and segregation, including those of individuals who served voluntarily in the Confederate States of America. This letter is a follow up letter to one the lawmakers sent on September 24, 2021.

Today, House Democrats passed the landmark Inflation Reduction Act, a monumental achievement that will deliver significant results for families in Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District. I was proud to help send this legislation to President Biden’s desk to sign into law. The Inflation Reduction Act is part of Democrats’ historic record of achievement this Congress—the fourth leg of our table of support and opportunity for the American people, complementing the already-enacted American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and CHIPS and Science Act.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) and Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Ben Cardin (D-MD), and Congressmen John Sarbanes (MD-03), Anthony Brown (MD-04), and Jamie Raskin (MD-08) announced $20,500,000 in federal funding to improve and expand New Carrollton Station and increase accessibility to the Prince George’s County transit hub. This funding, which the lawmakers supported, will support major infrastructure improvements for the multi-modal site, including the construction of a new train hall, preparations for Purple Line service, and creation of new trails and walkways to increase cyclist and pedestrian accessibility. The funds are provided through the Department of Transportation’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability & Equity (RAISE) Grants Program, which the lawmakers fought to significantly boost within the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
