CHARLES COUNTY - Congressman Steny Hoyer today joined Lee Kingham, Executive Director of the Epilepsy Foundation of the Chesapeake Region and Abilities Network and Travis Nichols, Program Director for Charles County to participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Epilepsy Foundation of the Chesapeake Region and the Abilities Network's new regional Southern Maryland office in La Plata. The Epilepsy Foundation of the Chesapeake Region is the local Epilepsy Foundation affiliate, which serves Maryland and Northern Virginia. Their sister organization, Abilities Network, provides developmental disabilities services for children and adults.________________________________________________________________________

WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives passed the fiscal year 2005 Military Construction Appropriations and Defense Authorization Conference Reports today that provide funds for two projects important to Indian Head Naval Surface Warfare Center and Charles County. Only one of these projects was included in the President's fiscal year 2005 budget, the other was added to the bills at the request of Congressman Hoyer.________________________________________________________________________

WASHINGTON Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) today announced that $65 million for the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Firefighters (SAFER) Program and $650 million for the Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program was included in the fiscal year 2005 Homeland Security Appropriations Conference Report. As a co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, Hoyer helped establish and fund both of these federal grant programs to assist fire departments across the country.________________________________________________________________________

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) sent a letter today to Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton, which address sections of a report on the U.S. Park Police that was issued by the National Academy of Public Administration last week. The report supports the statements regarding a shortage of resources and manpower made by U.S. Park Police Chief Teresa Chambers, who was subsequently dismissed from her post as a result of those remarks.________________________________________________________________________

WASHINGTON - Congressman Hoyer announced today that the Benedict Volunteer Fire Department was awarded a federal Fire Grant in the amount of $86,589 through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. As co-chair of the Congressional Fire Caucus, Congressman Hoyer was very active in helping establish and fund the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which helps local fire departments in Maryland and across the country buy equipment and provide adequate training.________________________________________________________________________

WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives last evening passed the fiscal year 2005 Defense Appropriations conference report, agreed to by both the House and the Senate, that contains funding important to Patuxent River Naval Air Station and Southern Maryland. This funding was added to the Defense Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2005 at Congressman Hoyer's request and was not included in the President's defense funding request for fiscal year 2005. Hoyer is a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee and worked to ensure these funds remained in the final version of this bill.________________________________________________________________________
