Hoyer Visits Rosa Parks Elementary School

April 12, 2017

HYATTSVILLE, MD – This morning, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) visited Rosa Parks Elementary School to meet with teachers, staff members, students and parents.

"Today I had the opportunity to visit a classroom and meet with parents, students, teachers and administrators at Rosa Parks Elementary School to discuss my commitment not only to public education but also to the safety and well-being of students and their families. Our teachers work tirelessly to ensure students have access to a quality education, often with limited resources. I am concerned that the policies of President Trump and Secretary DeVos would shortchange faculty and students, like those at Rosa Parks Elementary, by cutting federal funding for public education, eliminating important federal civil rights safeguards, and sending public money to private schools through school vouchers. I will continue to stand up for our public schools by fighting the Trump Administration's dangerous education policies.

"I appreciated hearing from parents and learning more about the challenges facing many Rosa Parks families regarding the uncertainty over our country's immigration policies. Congress has a responsibility to address our immigration challenges by passing comprehensive reforms that work to keep families together. I will continue to work with local organizations, including Casa de Maryland, and my colleagues in Congress to oppose policies that tear families apart and I will continue to advocate for comprehensive immigration reform."

"I thank Principal Tara A. Lobin, Maryland PTA President Elizabeth Ysla Leight, and Prince George's County Public School CEO Dr. Kevin Maxwell for hosting today's visit."
