Hoyer Thanks Tori Bellucci for Participating in Healthy Kids & Safe Sports Concussion Summit

May 29, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today recognizing Tori Bellucci, a Huntingtown High School graduate, who introduced President Obama at the Healthy Kids & Safe Sports Concussion Summit. Bellucci played four years of women's varsity soccer, was a team captain and an All-State selection, but the effects of five concussions she suffered while playing eventually caused her to turn down a full-ride scholarship to play soccer at Towson University:

"Today, Tori Bellucci, a 2014 graduate of Huntingtown High School, introduced President Obama at his Healthy Kids & Safe Sports Concussion Summit and shared how concussions she suffered while playing soccer impacted her ability to continue playing the sport. While I was saddened to learn that the effects of Tori's injuries mean she can no longer continue playing soccer in college, I'm proud that she is using her own experience to raise awareness about the effects of these injuries on student athletes.

"From soccer and football to wrestling and hockey, athletes participating in a wide-range of sports are at risk of concussions. That's why it's so important that we continue to raise awareness and invest in research to learn more about the causes and consequences of concussions and how to treat them. I'm pleased the Administration is bringing together public and private entities to examine these issues so that we can prevent injures and ensure athletes can safely participate in sports.

"I was pleased to hear that Tori is attending Flagler College in the fall and will stay involved in sports as a soccer coach. I thank her for sharing her story as we work together to help athletes stay safe as they compete."
