Hoyer Statement on the Passage of House Republicans' Budget Resolution

October 5, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after voting against House Republicans' budget resolution, which passed out of the House of Representatives this morning:

"The budget resolution passed today is nothing more than a Trojan horse to allow Republicans to jam their partisan tax plan through Congress. Their tax plan, which would add $2.4 trillion to the deficit and eliminate the state and local tax deduction, would disproportionately hurt Marylanders and force middle class Americans to pay more each year.

"If that weren't enough, the Republican budget resolution calls for cuts to retirement benefits for our hardworking federal workforce, slashes funding for investments in research and education, and fails to raise the sequestration caps for defense spending. Instead of working with Democrats to pass a fiscally responsible budget, Republicans continue to play partisan games, which would have severe consequences for Maryland families. I will continue to urge my Republican colleagues to work with Democrats to address our nation's debt in a fiscally responsible manner, and work toward bipartisan tax reform."
