Hoyer Statement on New Maryland State Superintendent of Schools
WASHINGTON, DC –Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) announced Dr. Karen B. Salmon as Maryland's next Superintendent of Schools, beginning July 1st:
"I join in congratulating Dr. Karen Salmon as the next Maryland Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Salmon has shown a commitment to the students of Maryland while spending the majority of her career in public education in our state. From more than 30 years as an educator on Maryland's Eastern Shore to her current role as Interim Deputy Superintendent for School Effectiveness at MSDE, Dr. Salmon has the leadership qualities and vision to lead Maryland public schools.
"I would also like to thank Dr. Jack Smith who served as interim state superintendent for the past year for his exceptional service to our students and his continued service to the state of Maryland. As Dr. Salmon prepares to begin her new role, I am certain that she will be a strong advocate for education in Maryland and will ensure that Maryland schools remain among the best in the nation. Education is one of my top priorities in Congress and I look forward to working with Dr. Salmon in the years to come."
