Hoyer Speaks to Students at Friends Community School

November 24, 2014

COLLEGE PARK, MD –This afternoon,Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) spoke with students from the Friends Community School (FCS), a Quaker K-8 day school in College Park. Hoyer spoke to the 6th – 8th grade students about a number of issues including the legislative process, what Congress should focus on in the remainder of the 113th Congress, and House Democrats' priorities for the next Congress. He also fielded questions from the students on a variety of topics.

"It was great to speak with so many of our future leaders at the Friends Community School this afternoon," said Congressman Hoyer. "I particularly enjoyed discussing with these bright students the importance of the legislative process and their interest in foreign policy and supporting diplomacy to build a more peaceful world. I am especially proud of the dedicated leadership of Head Master Larry Clements and teachers like Annie Boggess who have been successful in growing their student enrollment and expanding their progressive approach to education. Founded on the belief that every child is a valued member of our community, I am confident that their leadership and hard work will prepare these students for a successful future."

The Friends Community School was founded in 1986 by members of Adelphi Friends Meeting and was originally housed in Adelphi, Maryland. In 2013, FCS completed its first addition to its new building, enhancing spaces for the performing arts, visual arts, lower and middle school science, tutorial and small group spaces, and administration. Enrollment has grown to 225 students in grades K-8.
