Hoyer Speaks at Annual Youth Summit on Technology

May 10, 2015

BOWIE, MD – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) delivered remarks today at the Patriots 18th Annual Youth Summit on Technology at Bowie State University. The youth summit, hosted by the Patriots Technology Training Center in Seat Pleasant, educated 5th – 12th grade students about the importance of a college education and encouraged them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

"I was proud to see so many bright young people at the Patriots Youth Summit today who are excited about technology and science," said Congressman Hoyer.  "They understand that those who study STEM today are going to be the innovators who create the apps and devices of tomorrow. Whether through flight simulations, Renewable Energy Jeopardy Game, or the competition to build a computer, these students are learning critical skills that will help them be those innovators. These skills will help them get into college and pursue careers that are fun, meaningful, and pay well."

"Today, with the challenges of cybersecurity, defending against terrorism, and the search for discoveries to alleviate poverty and illness around the world, more and more people are getting excited about science and engineering," continued Congressman Hoyer. "I want to thank the parents and teachers who were present at the summit and for their encouragement and support of these students' participation. This generation is already shaping up to be the innovation generation and I'm excited to see what comes out of today's summit."

The summit also included workshops on technology and career issues, along with workshops for parents on college tuition and additional resources for paying for a college education.
