Hoyer Remarks at Inauguration of Dr. Wallace D. Loh

April 28, 2011

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) delivered remarks at the inauguration of Dr. Wallace D. Loh, the 33rd President of the University of Maryland. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:

"I am proud to welcome you to the inauguration of Dr. Wallace Loh as President of the University of Maryland. We are here to mark a new beginning for this university and this community—and in Dr. Loh's experienced hands, I know it is a new beginning we can be proud of.

"The University of Maryland changed my life. Here in College Park I gained an education that I carry with me to this day, and I learned from my teachers and my fellow students the value of service to a cause and a community greater than myself.

"I know that we are all here for similar reasons: because of the way this university has changed our lives, and because of the way it remains a presence in our lives long after we've graduated.

"For more than a century and a half, this university has represented the best of the American ideal of public education. I know how deeply Dr. Loh believes in that ideal—and how qualified he is to serve it as President of the University of Maryland.

"Dr. Loh brings to us more than three decades of hard work and accomplishment in higher education. He is a respected academic leader who has shaped for the better all of the institutions at which he has served, from the University of Washington Law School, to the University of Colorado-Boulder, to Seattle University, to the University of Iowa. He comes to us enriched by those experiences, with a track record of creating academic excellence at every step along the way. I could not think of a better leader for the University of Maryland.

"Under Dr. Loh, I have no doubt that this university will continue to grow and excel at its mission of bringing accessible and transformative educations to the people of our state, and the people from all over the globe who come here to learn and share in the University of Maryland's mission of building human knowledge.

"Dr. Loh: congratulations, and best of luck."
