Hoyer Observes Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Fifth District Events

January 21, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5)observed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the Fifth District by delivering remarks at St. Mary's College of Maryland's 12th Annual MLK Prayer Breakfast; the Calvert County Annual MLK Prayer Breakfast; and the Charles County NAACP's 21st Annual MLK Prayer Breakfast at North Point High School in Waldorf.

"I was honored to observe the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at events across the Fifth District today," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "We mark this day as a rededication of our efforts not only to stand up for civil rights but also to broaden economic opportunity. In Washington, I've been proud to stand with my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus as we've pushed to enact policies that help all Americans achieve the American Dream."

"We continue to work to restore protections for voting rights, to increase access to a quality education, and to combat poverty," continued Congressman Hoyer. "And we're going to keep working for as long as it takes to ensure that nobody in America goes hungry, no family suffers from homelessness, no child fears walking down the streets of his or her community, and no eligible voter is turned away at the polls because they've been purged from the voter rolls or don't have a photo ID. So as we commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Day this year, let us rededicate ourselves to the task of completing the work to which he called us. I look forward to continuing our work together in the year ahead as we work to make Dr. King's dream a reality in the Fifth District, across Maryland, and throughout our country and the world."

Congressman Hoyer also encourages Fifth District residents to participate in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service by volunteering in the community. The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." Click here to learn more.
