WASHINGTON, DC – This afternoon, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) met with the University System of Maryland Student Council, which advises the USM Chancellor and the Board of Regents. His meeting with the students was part of their federal lobbying day, which focused on student success. During the meeting, students discussed college affordability, reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, research funding, and protecting unpaid interns from sexual harassment in the workplace.
"I was pleased to join University System of Maryland student leaders today to discuss important issues facing Maryland students, including access to and affordability of higher education," stated Congressman Hoyer. "In order to build a skilled workforce, we must work together to ensure students and their families can afford higher education. With these expenses on the rise, it's important that Congress do its part by reauthorizing the Higher Education Act so we can address college costs in a comprehensive way. We must also continue to invest in research and innovation. That's why I continue to urge my colleagues to work together to replace the irrational policy of sequester with a big, balanced agreement that sets America on a fiscally sustainable path and allows us to invest in education and innovation, which are key to enhancing our nation's competitiveness."
