June 17, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC – Today on Capitol Hill,Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5)met with Parker Nickels, a Northern Middle School student from Calvert County who is participating in the National History Day competition. National History Day is a year-round academic program that encourages students in grades 6-12 to engage in original historical research. This year's contest theme is "Leadership and Legacy in History" and Parker's project was entitled, "Rachel Carson: Mother Earth." The project focused on the environmental legacy of Rachel Carson, whose book "Silent Spring" is credited with advancing the global environmental movement.

"I was very pleased to meet with Parker today to congratulate him on his history project and to wish him well as he competes against students from across the country," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "The National History Day competition is a great opportunity for the brilliant and creative students that we have in the Fifth District to learn about the importance of history. I applaud all the students from across the Fifth District and Maryland who also participated in the competition, along with the teachers who encourage them to participate each year."

Parker is one of 46 Calvert County Public School students who competed at the Maryland History Day competition last month. Students from Prince George's County also participated. Parker is competing this week in the national finals at the University of Maryland at College Park.
