Hoyer Hosts Reception for 35th Annual Fifth District Congressional Art Competition

July 22, 2016

PORT TOBACCO, MD – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) hosted a reception today for the participants of this year's Congressional Art Competition, "An Artistic Discovery." Their artwork was curated in a formal gallery exhibit at the Historic Port Tobacco Courthouse and the participants were each presented with a special certificate.  Tara Auman of St. Mary's County won this year's competition with her piece, titled "Turnips," which was selected by a jury of professional artists and college professors from the Fifth District and will be on display in the United States Capitol for an entire year.

"I want to congratulate all who participated in the 35th Annual Fifth District Congressional Arts Competition, as well as the families, teachers, and friends who encouraged these outstanding students along the way," said Congressman Hoyer. "Every spring, I am proud to host this competition to recognize students' talent and perseverance in pursuit of the arts. I was pleased to announce that Tara Auman is this year's winner and her artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol – in the corridor leading from representatives' offices to the House Floor. I also join in thanking the local art teachers and professional artists who selected the work they believe will best represent the talented young artists of our district."

In February, Rep. Hoyer announced the competition, inviting Fifth District students to submit their artwork for consideration. Twenty-nine students from across the Fifth District participated in the competition. The other art pieces submitted will be displayed in Rep. Hoyer's Waldorf District Office and rotated in his DC Office for a one month period over the course of the following year.
