Hoyer Hosts Discussion with Students Participating in TRIO Programs at College Park
COLLEGE PARK, MD –Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) today visited with students participating in TRIO Programs at the University of Maryland, College Park, to discuss how the program's services assist students and their families. The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities.
"Today I met with students at the University of Maryland who are participants of the federal TRIO programs," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "These important programs, including the Student Support Services Program, Upward Bound, and the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program, play a crucial role in helping students attend college and prosper while there. The key to our country maintaining its economic competiveness globally is making sure that all of our students, regardless of background, succeed in school and graduate. I appreciated the opportunity to hear directly from students about their experiences in these programs and discuss how we can continue working together to preserve and protect these programs so that they may meet the needs of generations of students to come."
TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs. In July, Congressman Hoyer announced that the University of Maryland at College Park received a $395,681 federal grant for its Student Support Services Program (SSS) from the U.S. Department of Education to provide students with academic and other support services they need to succeed in college.
