Hoyer Hosts Congressional Art Competition Recognition Event Honoring Fifth District Students
PORT TOBACCO, MD – This evening, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) honored the participants and top finishers in the 2017 Fifth District Congressional Art Competition.
"I congratulate all the extremely talented students who participated in this year's Fifth District Congressional Arts Competition," said Congressman Hoyer. "This year, eighteen works of art, ranging from photographs and oil paintings to watercolors and embroidery, were submitted for consideration. These students demonstrated great skill with their pieces, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing each of the works of art. I want to thank all of the young artists who devoted their time to participate in this competition, as well as the family and friends who have supported them throughout the process."
Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students nationwide have participated in the program. Local art teachers and professional artists review each submission to select the work they feel best represents the Fifth District. The winning piece from the Fifth District is awarded a spot for one year in the corridor leading from the Cannon House Office Building into the U.S. Capitol.
The 2017 Fifth District winners are as follows:
1st place: Lillian Bridges, Calvert County, Mixed media piece entitled "A Happy Spring"
2nd place: Jekko Syquia, Charles County, Oil painting entitled "Curiosity at Work"
3rd place: Erika Bowman, St. Mary's County, Ink piece entitled "Reptilian Symmetry"
Honorable mention: Ashley Bowman, Charles County, Oil painting entitled "The Colorful Lion"
