October 17, 2007
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) was honored the evening of October 16, 2007, by The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, one of the premier and largest organizations providing internships in Washington, D.C. For a career and life in leadership, the organization presented Rep. Hoyer with the Leadership Award.

"I am honored to be recognized by the premier organization providing internship opportunities for the next generation of leaders from around the world," stated Rep. Hoyer. "An internship is in many ways a gateway to leadership, helping students and young professionals gain critical experience. As a former intern myself, I can testify to the value of this training for developing the type of skills that can pave the way for success – both in one's career and in life."

A longtime advocate of internships as a way for students and young professionals to gain valuable skills and experience, Rep. Hoyer has been supportive of the Washington Center's programs, and helped establish the internship program with the Maryland State Legislature. As a leader in Congress, Rep. Hoyer frequently engages intern groups and hosts several interns in his 5th District and Majority Leader offices.

"We are delighted to present our award for leadership to House Majority Leader Hoyer," stated Michael B Smith, President of the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars. "His is an exemplary life in leadership and we are pleased to hold him up as a role model for our students."

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is an educational nonprofit organization serving hundreds of colleges and universities in the U.S. and other countries by providing selected students challenging opportunities to work and learn in Washington, D.C. for academic credit.
