Hoyer Holds Roundtable Discussion with Fifth District Make It In America Advisory Committee

August 7, 2014

BOWIE, MD – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) joined his Fifth District Make It In America Advisory Committee and other community stakeholders today for an update on the Make It In America jobs plan he is leading in Congress, including the addition of 25 new Make It In America bills.

"I thank the Fifth District Make It In America Advisory Committee for joining me today for an update on the Make It In America jobs plan and to discuss ways we can help more people in the Fifth District make it in America and here in Maryland," stated Congressman Hoyer. "The past few months have seen a number of important developments that have moved the Make It In America plan forward. Just two weeks ago, the President signed another Make It In America bill, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, into law, which will help workers access skills training for in-demand jobs. And over the past two months, a number of new Make It In America bills have been introduced to strengthen our economic competitiveness and encourage private sector hiring. The Fifth District Make It In America Advisory Committee has played a significant role in helping to develop proposals that will affect the growth and success of our manufacturing sector, and I was pleased to join them today to hear their additional ideas and feedback."

Since June, 25 Make It In America bills have been introduced, including:

  • The Rebuild American Manufacturing Act (H.R. 1127): Directs the President to develop a national manufacturing strategy that would identify sectors and emerging technologies in which US manufacturing can grow and be most competitive internationally. The strategy would encourage manufacturing companies to locate in the United States and develop strategies to help those sectors of the manufacturing industry that have the potential to flourish in a 21st century global economy.
  • Accelerate Our Manufacturers Act (H.R. 4822): Allows manufacturers to depreciate 100% of the cost of capital equipment purchased for the manufacturing process in the first year (instead of depreciating it over a period of years).
  • The Supporting Afterschool STEM Act (H.R. 5271): Creates a grant to support STEM afterschool programs and strengthens state, local and community partnerships by encouraging mentorships between students and federal STEM research grantees. This grant will be used to develop quality standards, provide technical assistance, coordinate professional development for afterschool program educators, and facilitate mentors.
  • The Rewarding the Training of Employees for American Manufacturing (Rewarding the TEAM) Act of 2014 (H.R. 5234): Establishes a manufacturing job training tax credit for American manufacturers who provide employees with job-related training, including coursework, certification testing, and essential skill acquisition.
