BALTIMORE, MD– Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) today delivered remarks at the inauguration ceremony for University System of Maryland (USM) Chancellor Robert L. Caret. Dr. Caret joined the University System of Maryland as its fourth chancellor on July 1, 2015.
"I was proud to celebrate the inauguration of Dr. Robert Caret today as the University System of Maryland's fourth chancellor," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "For Dr. Caret, this is in many ways, a homecoming. He served the cause of higher education in Maryland so ably for more than a quarter-century as a distinguished member of the faculty, administrator, and president of Towson University. I very much look forward to working with him and his team to ensure that the University System has all the Federal resources it needs to continue graduating the next generation of leaders for our state and country.
"There are so many exciting things ahead for the University System, with new opportunities in science and technology research as well as efforts to make our campuses safer, more diverse, and charged with the energy of discovery and innovation," continued Congressman Hoyer. "Brit Kirwan did an outstanding job of making this University System one of the best in the world and a point of immense pride for all Marylanders. Now we place the work into Dr. Caret's hands, with great hope for the future and anticipation for even greater things to come. Congratulations again to Dr. Caret, and to all the students, faculty, and staff of the University System on this beginning to what I am certain will be the next chapter of extraordinary growth and opportunity for higher education in Maryland."
Before joining the USM as chancellor, Dr. Caret was president of the University of Massachusetts System (UMass). Dr. Caret was president of Towson University from 2003 to 2011, where he also served as a faculty member, dean, executive vice president, and provost during his 29-year tenure.
