October 28, 2013

HYATTSVILLE, MD – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) attended a ribbon cutting ceremony for College Park Academy (CPA), an innovative public middle and high school. At the event, he joined Governor Martin O'Malley, Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker, State Senator Jim Rosapepe, Delegate Barbara Frush, College Park Mayor Andrew Fellows, College Park Council Member Denise Mitchell, University of Maryland President Wallace Loh, Executive Director of CPA Marcy Cathey, and Principal Bernadette Ortiz-Brewster.

"I was proud to join in celebrating the opening of College Park Academy today and learn more about the innovative instruction it will provide to Maryland students," stated Congressman Hoyer. "The Academy will not only make our students college ready, but will provide them with the opportunity to participate in early college and ensure they have the education and skills to succeed. I thank the College Park City-University Partnership for making the College Park Academy a reality, as well as the O'Malley-Brown Administration, County Executive Baker, and others for their support."

College Park Academy is an innovative  public middle and high school for 6th and 7th graders, which features a rigorous college-prep program with blended online and on-site instruction. Students can participate in early college, earning up to 60 college credits, including 25 University of Maryland credits. Presently, the Academy has 300 students enrolled and it is expected to grow annually by one grade until it encompasses grades 6-12. The Academy  was created by the College Park City-University Partnership (CPCUP) – a partnership between the University of Maryland and the City of College Park – along with support from the Prince George's County Public School System, the State of Maryland, and Prince George's County.
