Hoyer Announces Winner of the 2013 Fifth District Congressional Art Competition
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) announced the 2013 Fifth District Congressional Art Competition winner: Sarah Sindelar, a senior at Chopticon High School in St. Mary's County. Sarah's artwork, titled "Sarah and Matthew," will be on display in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
"I'm so proud of our talented students in the Fifth District who submit outstanding artwork for the Fifth District Congressional Art Competition each year," stated Congressman Hoyer. "It is my pleasure to announce that the Fifth District selection panel has chosen Sarah's artwork to represent the Fifth District this year. I congratulate Sarah on her hard-earned accomplishment, and thank all of the participants for submitting exceptional artwork, which I'm proud to display in my offices this year."
The Congressional Art Competition, held each year, allows Members of Congress to showcase the artistic talent of high school students from their districts. Each year, Congressman Hoyer sends letters to Fifth District high schools announcing the Congressional Art Competition and outlining the rules for artwork submission. A selection panel comprised of members of the Fifth District arts community – including art teachers and professional artists – reviewed each submission and selected Sarah's piece to represent the Fifth District. All other artwork submitted by Fifth District students will be displayed in Congressman Hoyer's offices throughout the year.
