July 17, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) today announced that the University of Maryland, Bowie State University and Prince George's Community College will be awarded grants from the U.S. Department of Education to provide students with academic and other support services they need to succeed in college. The University of Maryland at College Park will receive $395,681, Bowie State University will receive $299,487 and Prince George's Community College will be awarded $355,680.

"I am pleased to announce this grant funding that will provide critical services to the University of Maryland, Bowie State, and Prince George's Community College where many Fifth District students attend school," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "Student Support Services (SSS) programs are important resources at colleges and universities that continue to help so many students on their path to success. Expanding more opportunities for our young people to further their education is an important investment for their future, our state and country."

The SSS program is one of seven Federal TRIO Programs, which provide outreach and student services for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, low income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities, foster care youth or homeless children and youth. Some of the projects under the program include academic tutoring, assistance in course selection, information about financial aid and economic literacy, and support and resources to help students transfer from two-year to four-year colleges or from undergraduate to graduate or professional studies.
