Hoyer Announces More Than $248,000 in Federal Funding to Bowie State to Help Serve Children with Disabilities

April 18, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) today announced that Bowie State University has been awarded $248,025 for the first year of what is anticipated to be a five year grant from the U.S. Department of Education intended to support programs that make sure there are enough trained personnel to serve children with disabilities.

"I am pleased to announce this critical grant funding for Bowie State University that will ensure that there are qualified personnel in special education and early intervention to work with students with disabilities," said Congressman Steny Hoyer. "As a lead sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act, helping disabled Americans enter the workforce and achieve independence has been one of my proudest accomplishments in Congress. It is important that we ensure that our institutions of higher education are training teachers and faculty to have the necessary skills and knowledge they need to serve children with special needs."

The grant is a part of the Combined Priority for Personnel Development Program at the Department of Education and will make funding available for Bowie State's Project SEED. Project SEED provides a specialized Master of Arts degree in early childhood special education focused on culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) young children with disabilities. The project will educate and retain 33 special educators from outside fields with coursework and specialization in reading, research and internship, and early childhood special education.
