Hoyer Announces Grants for University of Maryland

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) announced today that the University of Maryland has been awarded nearly $1 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Education. The University received two Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Program grants that will provide funding over three years. The University was awarded a $133,266 grant each year for three years to support five fellowships at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in collaboration with the Department of Aerospace Engineering and a $177,688 grant each year for three years to support four fellowships in the Department of Chemistry. The fellowship provides students with supervised teaching experience with professors and the opportunity to deliver lectures.

"I'm pleased the University of Maryland has received this funding to support nine additional fellowships in the engineering and chemistry programs," stated Congressman Hoyer. "These areas of study are critical to boosting American competitiveness and developing a highly-skilled workforce. The Make It In America jobs plan I am leading in Congress makes STEM learning in higher education a priority investment, and I will continue to work with our state's higher education institutions so that we can out-educate and out-innovate our competitors and ensure our students have the education and skills needed for well-paying jobs."

The Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Program provides fellowships to assist graduate students who plan to pursue the highest degree available in a field designated as an area of national need. These students have excellent records and have demonstrated financial need.
