Hoyer Accepting U.S. Service Academy Applications

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) announced today that his office is currently accepting U.S. Service Academy applications for the 2011-12 school year. For students' convenience, Service Academy Application packets are available online on Congressman Hoyer's website. Included in the packet are all information and materials needed to complete and submit the application, which must be postmarked for delivery to Hoyer's office by October 15, 2010.

Hoyer also announced today that he will host the 29th Annual U.S. Academy and Military Career Forum at the Show Place Arena located at 14900 Pennsylvania Avenue in Upper Marlboro on Monday, April 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Hoyer's annual forum provides students an opportunity to learn more about an interesting and fulfilling career in the United States Military and will feature representatives of the U.S. Service Academies, local University ROTC Programs and Military Service Recruiters.

"Our nation's United States Service Academies offer a tremendous opportunity to receive a high quality education and develop leadership skills that are the hallmark of the best military in the world," stated Congressman Hoyer. "Every year, I am proud to recommend students from Maryland's 5th District to these prestigious institutions. All interested students are invited to join me and our academy representatives on Monday, April 19th for an informational forum on the education and career opportunities for students attending a U.S. Service Academy and how you can apply."

Every year Congressman Hoyer nominates outstanding candidates from the 5th Congressional District for admission into one of four United States service academies: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York (Army), the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.

Interest in U.S. Service Academies is on the rise, with applications to Congressman Hoyer's office increasing 25% over the last three years. This year, Rep. Hoyer nominated 26 students for consideration. Accepted nominees for the 2010-11 school year will be announced later this spring.

In order to pursue appointment to one of the academies, students between the ages of 17 and 22 must be nominated.  To begin the nomination process, students can obtain the application packet online on Congressman Hoyer's website or can contact can contact Ms. Betty Rogers in Congressman Hoyer's Greenbelt Office at (301) 474-0119.
