COLLEGE PARK, MD – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) delivered the commencement address for the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) commencement ceremony, where he spoke to over 1,200 of UMUC’s nearly 9,500 graduates. Below is his address as prepared for delivery:
“Thank you, and congratulations to the University of Maryland University College graduates of 2013 and 2014!
“Both to those who are here and to those who, though they could not be with us today, share in this milestone.
I am pleased that the President signed bipartisan legislation, H.R. 4120, into law today, which I was proud to co-sponsor along with Rep. Frank Wolf of Virginia.
I was pleased to welcome Maryland small business owners to today's event, where Google experts shared their knowledge of how to use free online tools to help businesses create a website, reach more customers, be more productive, and expand.
I was pleased to join Fifth District residents today to celebrate Older Americans' Month and to recognize the incredible work that the Prince George's County Department of Family Services does for our communities.
I'm proud that Maryland's public school system is rated among the best in the nation and there is no doubt that we have Maryland teachers to thank for that distinction.
I'm pleased I had an opportunity to visit Phoenix International to see firsthand the outstanding work they perform in Maryland and around the world.
There are few tasks more important to the Congress and the people it represents than to keep faith with those who have worn the uniform of our nation.
