October 3, 2023 Press Release WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after voting to vacate the Chair of the Speaker of the House Representatives: “Today is a sad day for the House of Representatives. As someone who has always had the utmost concern for preserving the integrity of this institution, I regret the circumstances in which the House found itself today. This day was, in part, a result of Republicans trying to accommodate a small, willful group of extreme MAGA Republican members, who will not be satisfied with any compromise that can be enacted in the political context that currently exists. “We must try to find common ground to make the people’s government work. Speaker McCarthy did that to avoid a default on our debt and a shutdown of our government. There is a rational, bipartisan majority in the House to ensure that our country moves forward in a positive way. We should seek that path.”
