Hoyer Statement on Voting to Avert a Government Shutdown
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after voting on a continuing resolution to fund the government and avert a shutdown:
"Just as it has throughout the 118th Congress, this deeply divided, divisive, and dysfunctional Republican Conference proved incapable of resolving its own manufactured crisis. The only substantive legislation to pass out of the House of Representatives this Congress has done so with Democratic support. Today's Continuing Resolution was no different. After breaking our bipartisan deal at the urging of Donald Trump and Elon Musk, failing to unite their Conference around an alternative, and bringing our nation to the brink of a disruptive and unjustifiable government shutdown, Republicans needed Democrats to step in to ensure our Congress could govern.
"In addition to keeping the government open, I am pleased that we were able to secure longstanding priorities in this legislation. I worked closely with the rest of Team Maryland to ensure this bill included federal funding to cover the full cost of replacing the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The legislation also included vital aid for Americans affected by other disasters across the country, as well as support for our nation's farmers.
"I am glad we averted a shutdown, but it is damning that Republicans brought us so close to one. Democrats have consistently provided the votes to keep the government open and operational for the American people, while House Republicans have consistently used government shutdowns in an attempt to achieve their political ends. Today’s vote was no different, and I urge my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to learn from this experience and work with Democrats during the next Congress to deliver for the American people in a bipartisan way.”
